It’s the perfect day escape and is less than 2 hours from Cork and Limerick, and only 1 hour from Dublin, so pack up the car, or book the train or bus tickets without the added expense of an overnight stay. SOLAS Eco Garden Centre
Located in Portarlington, SOLAS is an eco-friendly garden centre with beautiful plants, great coffee and delicious food - an ideal spot for a catch up with friends.
This nine acre site is Ireland's greenest campus and provides an inspiring setting with a cafe, restaurant and retail all found on site. Practical, interactive and hands-on courses are available, as well as a number of events taking place on the garden centre’s grounds, including a Craft Market on 2nd July and a Wildflower Watercolour Painting course on 9th July, and so much more!
Rathdowney Playground or “Darú na nÓg”
Rathdowney Playground or “Darú na nÓg” playground is located at St Fergal’s College, Rathdowney. The large playground was designed by children for children - it is a mecca for kid’s mecca, so it’s perfect for a family day out.
The playground embodies all a child may want. It has MUGA, or multi use games areas, which provides valuable additions to play areas and anywhere restricted space can compromise access to sport facilities.
Rathdowney Playground is a purpose built area that allows children to play sports such as football and basketball, while remaining safe with surrounding fences. Children of all ages can enjoy a play at Darú na nÓg!
Barrow Way – Bike Hire
Looking for an activity that’s a bit more adventurous and want to see the amazing nature and wildlife Laois have to offer? Then the Barrow Way Bike Trail is just that. With the Barrow Way Bike Hire you can explore the beautiful hidden gems of the Midlands at a leisurely pace on quality hybrid, mountain and electric bikes for both adults and children. Barrow Way Bike Hire follows the ancient towpath along the stunning Grand Canal and River Barrow.
Emo Court and Gardens
Located in the shadow of the Slieve Blooms mountains, Emo Court and Gardens is a stunning estate rich in history and natural beauty. This neoclassical mansion was home to the earls of Portarlington until the War of Independence forced them from Ireland. The Jesuits moved in shortly after and the mansion was home base to around 500 of the order's trainees.
Emo Court was fully restored in the 1960s and the stunning gardens became open to the public before the entire estate was opened in 1994, so is the perfect attraction for any history or garden enthusiast. At Emo Court, enjoy a charming day around the lake and woodland walks.
Rock of Dunamase
This iconic Laois landmark makes the perfect spot for a picnic with remarkable views. After a brief uphill stroll from the road, take in the sceneries of Laois, Carlow, Kildare, Offaly and beyond.
Rock of Dunamase has been a historic site for over 1,000 years, so what better a place to enjoy history, views, and a picnic? Located between Portlaoise and Stradbally, this historic site saw Vikings, Normans, native tribes, and much more. Here, you can sit back and enjoy the beauty of Laois while soaking in the history as well.
