In a statement published on her Instagram page today, the former I'm A Celebrity contestant wrote: "After five years, I’m leaving my Saturday morning show on BBC Radio Wales.
“The BBC recently introduced new social media guidelines which I respect. However, despite my show being lighthearted with no political content, it was explained to me that as it is a weekly show in my name, the new guidelines would apply to all and any content that I post all year round."
She expressed her fear of losing herself in the new guidelines, which ultimately led to her making this drastic decision.
“Since those non-negotiable changes to my radio contract were made, I’ve ultimately found that I’m not prepared to lose my voice on social media, change who I am, or lose the ability to express the strong beliefs I hold about the political turmoil the country finds itself in.
“I was brought up to fight for what I believe in, and I will carry on.”
The decision was not an easy one for Carol to make, but she is sure that this is the right decision for herself and her career.
“I’m sad to have to leave the wonderful friends I’ve made at Radio Wales. I wish them, and all our listeners, all the love in the world. We laughed a lot, and we will miss each other dearly.
“But for now, another interesting chapter begins.”
She finished off her statement with the Welsh phrase ‘Diolch yn fawr iawn i chi i gyd’ which translates to ‘Thank you all very much’ in English.
Carol Vorderman’s presence will be greatly missed on BBC Radio Wales, as her fans commented, “You do you Carol! Much respect for sticking up for who you are and not allowing corporations to silence you!” and “Massive respect to you as I know how much you loved that show. Sending all my love.”
Some stars have also come out in support of Carol today, with Cat Deeley commenting, “You are bloody brilliant”, Alan Carr saying “Big respect Carol”, and Katie Piper commending Carol’s bravery, saying “She’s an icon.”
Carol Vorderman has hosted her Saturday morning BBC Radio Wales show since 2019, but has also appeared on Countdown, Loose Women and more recently, I’m a Celebrity South Africa.
