Cork mum Vicky gave birth to her baby boy, Conor, this weekend in the back of her husband’s car.
The couple were on their way to the hospital when she announced that they weren’t going to make it in time.
Their son weighed in at 6lbs 13oz with his dad, Stephen, describing him as “perfect” with “all fingers and toes”.
He told The Neil Prendeville Show on Red FM about the incredible experience, saying: “[The contractions] were on and off from Friday and there were good gaps of three to four hours in between, so we weren’t too worried.
“But from one o’clock Sunday, they really picked up.”
Vicky was in the bathtub using a TENS machine which sends out mild electric pulses for pain relief.
Stephen explained that at 5.30pm they rang the hospital to let them know they were coming in.
“We got her out of the bath, dressed and down the stairs and things really started ramping up more and more.
“Got into the back of the car and as we were getting down the hill, Vicky was saying, ‘Nope, it’s coming’.”
The couple had reached the Sarsfield Road roundabout in Cork when Vicky delivered the baby herself.
Stephen described the experience as starting out as “slow and steady” with it turning “fast and quick”.
The pair didn’t even have time to pull over or call the hospital before their son arrived.
When they finally reached the hospital, the dad said the staff at Cork University Maternity Hospital were brilliant.
“I ran in and I could barely put words together. I flagged down a nurse when I got into reception and the staff were out within two minutes.
“They were delighted and said everything was fine. They brought her down to the emergency ward and told me to park the car which was difficult enough after that.”
The mother and son duo are doing excellent after the unconventional birth, with Stephen sharing that they were out of the hospital in less than 24 hours.
“Vicky was an absolute warrior and I’m very proud of her, she just did absolutely amazing.”
