Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a common concern among men, often associated with aging.
However, recent reports suggest that it is no longer confined to the older demographic.
Speaking to RSVP Live, Dr. Janine David, a General Practitioner with Special Interest (GPwSI) in Men's Health gave insight into the increasing prevalence of ED and the various treatment options available.

Dr. David said: "It is getting more and more common - it increases with age - I usually think of it as around 60% of over 60s and 70% over 70. But I am seeing more in younger men now (we are seeing more testosterone deficiency and reduced sperm counts in younger men too)."
Dr. David highlights an over-the-counter option, Eroxon, a gel which is easy to apply, and can be incorporated into foreplay.
She added that its quick action, taking effect within 10 minutes, and its unique feature of involving the partner in the treatment process.
The ease of use and lack of interference with other medications make it a safe choice.
"PDE5 inhibitors (oral medication) - Viagra and now Cialis available over the counter too - but need to be careful as they can react with some heart medications," cautioned Dr. David.
For those seeking alternatives, pumps and injectables are available on prescription. These options provide additional choices for individuals who may not respond well to oral medications or prefer different forms of treatment.
She advises that lifestyle has a big impact and you should: "Exercise more - eat a better diet including whole foods that are not processed. The Mediterranean diet is best."
She added: "Limit alcohol intake, regular exercise, and stop smoking."
Lifestyle modifications can significantly improve blood flow to the penis, contributing to better overall sexual health.
Discussing potential side effects, Dr. David notes: "Side effects depend on the medication.
"PDE5 inhibitors can lower blood pressure, cause heartburn, muscle aches, and rarely, blue vision."
It is important for individuals considering these medications to be aware of potential side effects and consult with their healthcare provider.
