Dublin bride's magical Mullingar wedding after surprise New Year's proposal
Dublin bride Nicola Symes said yes to her now husband James after he planned a romantic home surprise proposal with their two children on New Year's Eve of 2020
THE HAPPY COUPLE
Nicola and James Symes from Swords, Co. Dublin
THE RECEPTION
The Bloomfield House Hotel in Mullingar. It was the most beautiful venue and the staff were amazing. It was a choice between two for the venue. I had a zoom call with Joanne and just got such wonderful vibes and excitement after the call and I knew it was meant to be.
The Bloomfield Hotel has such stunning views and the hotel was just fabulous. The reception itself took place at 3pm after the ceremony. The staff in the hotel were so accommodating, friendly, helpful and kind.

They really helped us deliver the most incredible day. This hotel will always have a magical spark in our hearts.
It was a beautiful sunny day, there was one small sun shower during our drinks reception but it wasn’t long thankfully! We had 87 guests in total. We had planned for 100 but there were some changes and drop outs along the way with Covid.
THE PROPOSAL
James proposed to me on 31/12/20. It was the most special, romantic proposal after a lovely evening with our children. He had somehow managed to set the whole romantic scene in our spare room without me knowing.
As it came close to the countdown he called me in and our daughter to watch the fireworks out the window but made me close my eyes. As Ava helped me in, our song started playing ‘Can’t help falling in love’ and when I opened my eyes James was on one knee serenading me and asked me to marry him. I was in a ball of tears, it was so emotional.
The words he spoke to me will stay with me forever. It was a few minutes before the countdown and we did that together with our giddy, happy first born while our newborn slept. It was absolutely perfect.
THE DRESS
I got my dress in Pearls and Lace in Donegal. I highly recommend them. The staff was so helpful. I purchased my dress on a zoom call and it was the best decision ever.

The dress was beyond my wildest dreams. The designer was ‘Kate’
THE BAND
We had the Gossip Band. Claire and the gang were fantastic. They had everyone dancing the whole time and gave us all the best lively buzz and kept us on our toes all night!
THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Peter Bell photography.
THE FIRST DANCE
Our first dance was to Andrea Boceli/Elvis Presley ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’. We have been dating since we were 16 and we used to discuss what wedding song we would use and this came on one time and we both knew it was our song. It was perfect.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
The speeches and emotions ran high. Having our kids included in the wedding was so special. Our daughter Ava, 7 was flower girl and Callum, 1, was page boy.
It all went smoothly thank God. It was just the most special and memorable day of our lives. At times, the stress set in while we were organising. It was bound to happen but overall we were calm, relaxed and the day was more than I could have dreamed of.
THE HONEYMOON
We went to Dubai in January 2022 for five nights. We had the most amazingly special time together, kid free. Dubai is a beautiful place and we would definitely love to return.
