Fitbits make great Christmas presents, motivating people to get up off the couch and get moving again once the festive season has ended.

However, setup requires a bit of work and there's a danger that if you leave it in the box too long, that motivation will dwindle.

If you've gotten a fitness tracker in your stocking this year, get it set up and start using it for the best chance of success.

Devices must be connected to a Fitbit account with a phone, tablet, or computer in order to transfer and sync data.

The good news is - you can do this from the couch while watching Home Alone for the 50th time - it mgiht even stop you from finishing off the entire tub of roses!

How to sync your Fitbit with an iPhone

1. Download the Fitbit app from the App Store on your iPhone.

2. Sign up for a new Fitbit account or log in if you already have one.

3. Select your Fitbit device model and start the setup process - you'll be asked to enter your account details and personal information about your height, weight, age and other relevant details for working out your fitness goals.

4. When syncing a Fitbit for the first time, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone. Your device will display a four-digit code which you must itype in to your phone. From there you'll be prompted to connect via Bluetooth.

5. After accepting or rejecting push notifications from the app, you'll be taken to your Fitbit's  home screen where tracking metrics and options to set up additional features will be displayed.

1. Download and open the Fitbit app from Google Play.

2. Tap Join Fitbit.

3. Choose your Fitbit device.

3. Select Set Up.

4. Create an account. Type in your email address and a password, and tap Next.

5. Fill out your personal information, and tap Save to finish your profile.

6. Ensuring that Bluetooth is switched on in your smartphone settings, pair Your Tracker with your phone so that you can sync the activity monitored by your device with the Fitbit app. The Fitbit app will automatically look for your tracker.
