Dubliner Gerard joined the cast of Fair City just this year, and plays the character Steo Nash- a character is at the centre of a love triangle between him, his best mate Greg Kiely and the mother of the baby Jess Mullen.
Speaking about what life was like before he had children, the soap star said: “When I had my first child when I was 25 it was kind of a real shock to me, because I was used to going out every weekend and out with the lads and all that sort of thing.
“I have to say having a child really settled me down, sort of ‘I need to work... I need to do this’."
The 33 year old said having children made him realise he needed to take his responsibilities a bit more seriously.
Speaking to the Sunday World, Gerard said: “It makes you think ‘I better get my act together here’ and start providing and helping out and working as much as possible as I could. That’s what I try and do every single day.”
Gerard praised his wife Jo, who he says is the rock of their family, and takes care of all the things at home while he's working.
He said: "“Jo is great. She does everything for the kids when I’m not there – she brings them to school, then brings them home. She’s one of those school bus drivers, bringing them back and forth. She has been brilliant.”
The new actor says he works part-time on the show, while maintaining a job as an insurance broker the rest of the week to cover costs for his family, which will soon be a family of 9.
He said: “It’s not so much that Fair City is full time, about two days a week max. So, you can kind of work around it as well.
“I kind of fell into sales, it was something I was really good about, something I was passionate about. Kind of like helping people, giving them a helping hand, and providing them with a service."
Gerard says the cast of Fair City have made him feel really welcome since he joined the cast.
He said: “I have to say absolutely everybody has been brilliant since I’ve arrived."
