With over 10k followers on Instagram, Garda Fiona Coleman Morgan's infectious smile and bubbly can do attitude has won her a legion of fans. “I just love fashion and was always dressing up or styling myself for race days, so my friends kept telling me why not give Instagram a try.”
However, the 41 year old nearly pulled the plug on her account, just a day after setting it up, when she got the news every woman dreads.
“The day I posted my first video, I was on my way to the hospital in Limerick after finding a lump on my breast back in April, initially they thought I was ok, but unfortunately that day I was told I had breast cancer”.
Driving home, still reeling from the news, Fiona told herself she would have to delete the page, after all, she could hardly carry on now.
However, something in the back of her mind urged her to continue, and she now believes her Instagram account carried her through some of the toughest days as she undergoes chemotherapy to fight cancer.
“It’s actually been fantastic” she explains, “there are days where you could lie in bed all day if you wanted to, but because I have the following now, I am constantly being given that boost.”
“I have people messaging me seeing how I am, telling me they bought something on my recommendation, asking me for tips and that really gives me the drive to get up out of bed and come online.”
Social media has given Fiona an outlet during the worst days of her cancer battle and one thing it has taught the Tipperary woman, who now lives in Mayo, is the power of her own mind.“I made a conscious decision that I was going to be positive because I love life, I love living” she explains.
“And you can do it, your mind and your body is amazing. You could be thinking you are really sick and next thing you are putting on a face of makeup and suddenly you are feeling a bit better, your body overcomes it.”
“When you are in chemo It’s a weird sickness that will last from morning until night time but you just have to get through it and you do get through it.”
That is not to say Fiona hasn’t struggled, the mum of two admits some parts of her diagnosis have been harder to bear than others.
Her cancer is oestrogen driven and treatment means the drugs are killing off all the oestrogen in her body, so she feels very lucky and proud she was able to have her two sons, before her diagnosis.
And like many women, she struggled emotionally when she realised she would lose her hair. “That was the toughest part,” she admits. “That for any female is traumatising. But you have to learn to accept it and you know that this is the journey, this is what has to happen for you to get better.”
However, she adds, “I can’t wait for it to grow back!”.
But overall, she insists the future is bright and she is determined to remain positive.
“Getting up in the morning being positive, being grateful for what is around you and spending time with loved ones, that to me is important to live your best life,” she says.
