Hay fever affects so many of us, causing awful and irritating symptoms such as sneezing and itchy eyes.

The culprit behind dreaded hay fever is pollen; it can be difficult to keep pollen out of our homes in the warm seasons, especially since we love to keep our doors and windows open.

However, we have a list of indoor plants that can not only refresh your environment and add beauty but can actually help to ease your hay fever symptoms.

Professional gardening and plant expert Lucie Bradley from Two Wests & Elliott shared with RSVP Live that the following plants that have the ability to filter air and minimise airborne allergens.

  • Aloe Vera - This plant is ideal for hay fever sufferers trying to sleep at night, as aloe vera lets out oxygen at night rather than during the day. This is why aloe vera is a great option for improving indoor air quality to ease allergies.

  • Snake Plant - Another plant that releases oxygen at night is the snake plant. This plant is known for its air-cleansing abilities; it can drain out allergens making it another great option to include in your home.

  • Areca Palm - This plant has large leaves that are excellent for capturing allergens and helps to minimise harmful chemicals.

  • Dracaena - The dracaena plant is one of the most popular allergy-friendly indoor plants as it has the ability to capture allergens with its leaves while also soaking up carbon monoxide.

  • Devil’s Ivy - This low-maintenance plant is another great option for easing hay fever symptoms, as it can eliminate allergens and toxins in your home.

  • Boston Fern - This plant flourishes in moderate sunlight and has the ability to humidify the air and can reduce the dryness related to hay fever.

All plants are different and may require different maintenance methods. It is important to do your research into each plant to give it the best chance of purifying your environment and maintaining its effectiveness.
