Many people often wonder how many times they should pee a day.

There are days where you seem to find yourself nipping to the loo more often than usual, and others where you’re surprised that you didn’t need to go at all.

There can be a lot of misconceptions over what is right or wrong when it comes to peeing - how often should you be going? Why do you keep going so much, and is there anyway to stop it?

Here is everything you need to know.

How often should I pee?

According to Medical News Today, most people pee on average between 6-7 times every day.

Different factors can influence how much you pee daily, for example what foods you’ve eaten that day, how much fluid you’ve drunk, how much you’ve perspired and how much you weigh among other reasons.

While between 6 and 7 is the average, going between 4 and 10 times depending on the above factors is also considered healthy .

Why do I keep peeing so much?

While everyone is different, if you find yourself going to the bathroom a bit more than normal, here are some possible reasons why.

You’re drinking too much water: It may seem an obvious reason, but it’s true! While drinking on average two litres of water per day is recommended, overdoing it can result in some extra trips to the bathroom.

You’re drinking too many diuretics: Drinks many of us consume everyday such as coffee, tea and fizzy drinks can boost your peeing frequency as they act as diuretics. How diuretics work is that they increase the amount of salt and water that comes out of the kidneys, and make you pee more as a result.

You have a urinary tract infection: This happens when bacteria from the bowel makes it’s way to either your bladder, urethra, ureter or kidneys, with most UTI’s taking place in the bladder. When this infection occurs, your bladder becomes inflamed and irritated and this is what makes you feel like you have to pee all of the time - even if you actually don’t. If you think you may be suffering from this, visit your doctor.

You’re pregnant: According to the Mayo Clinic, a woman’s blood volume increases in the first trimester, so kidneys have to process excess fluid that ends up in your bladder. So if you’re peeing a lot of the time and run out of other explanations, this could be the one!

Is there anything I can do to stop peeing all the time?

While there is no definite way to stop it for sure, there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the amount of times you go - but remember that each individual is different and what works for one person may not work for another.

Bladder retraining: This means increasing the intervals between using the bathroom over the course of about 12 weeks. This can help retrain your bladder to hold urine longer and to pee less frequently. Be careful though - if you’re in pain holding it in, it’s better to let it go.

Change up your diet: As mentioned, drinking too many diuretics can cause you to pee more frequently, so cutting down on coffee, tea and fizzy drinks will be a big help to you. Also avoiding foods that you know will make you thirsty - such as salty and spicy foods - can help the problem.

Monitor your fluid intake: You should be drinking enough everyday to prevent problems such as constipation and over-concentrating your urine, but by monitoring just how much you drink daily you can determine your limits. For example, try avoid having a drink before bedtime as this can lead to needing to pee during the night and therefore disturb your sleet pattern.
