Home is Where the Heart Is: Ailbhe Garrihy opens up about moving into her dream home with husband Ruaidhrí Hehir and their sons, Seán and Fionn - and how she decorated it

When Ailbhe Garrihy and her husband Ruaidhrí Hehir left Australia to return to Ireland in 2015, buying a house together was high on their agenda.
Like most people, it was a long road for them, but it was also a road filled with happy memories and milestones. They got married in Doolin in 2019 and welcomed their two sons, Seán and Fionn, in August 2020 and January of this year.
With the hard parts out of the way, such as getting finance and finding the perfect pad, all the attention has turned to adding their personal touch to their forever home.
Here, Ailbhe opens up about the buying process, getting tips from her sister Aoibhín and her parents, and turning the house into a home.

Furnishing a home
Homeware shopping was when things got very interesting. As soon as we went sale agreed, I was on Pinterest full-time. I went into Homesense as I wanted to make the house unique and turn it into our home. I loved every minute of it. I was in there at least once a week to pick up everything we needed, whether it was towels, bedding, candles or an ornament to finish off a corner in a room.

We’re in a cost of living crisis and I’m a firm believer in spending more money, but spending it less often. You’re getting top quality products that you need. The bedding, for example, is so important when you have two babies in the bed with you and the spillages they bring. You need to know that no matter how many times you wash something it will hold its colour and quality.

Every room is pretty different. We knew we were having another baby boy when we went sale agreed so that influenced my colour choices. The kitchen is navy and blue, which I love and it is perfect for two little boys running around. The living room is green and brown and we went a bit wild with our downstairs bathroom.
