Met Eireann has pinpointed when temperatures will plummet to subzero temperatures as frost and ice are due to hit the country this week.

Today (Tuesday November 28) will see highs of 4 to 8 degrees during the day.

Temperatures are expected to dip to -2 tonight.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A frosty start today with lingering mist and fog that will slowly clear through the morning, leaving a mostly dry day with spells of sunshine.

"There will be some scattered showers, mainly in the north and east. Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees in a light, variable wind.

"Mostly dry [tonight] with clear spells, although isolated showers will affect some northern coastal areas. Cloud will increase in the west overnight and may bring some patchy light rain or drizzle.

"Cold with lowest temperatures of -2 to +4 degrees, so there will be frost and possibly ice in some areas. Widespread areas of mist and fog will form as winds stay light and variable."

Things will turn even cooler overnight from Wednesday (November 29) onwards.

During the day, temperatures aren't expected to reach higher than 7 degrees, while widespread frost and possible ice will hit overnight.

Met.ie says: "Mist and fog will slowly clear and it will be a generally cloudy day. Some breaks in the cloud will result in sunny spells, with longer clear spells developing by evening.

"Many areas will stay dry but there will be patchy rain or drizzle, mainly in coastal areas. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees in a light easterly wind.

"Cloud and outbreaks of rain or drizzle will move southwards on Wednesday night but will linger near the south coast early on in the night. Some light rain and drizzle may move into the east later.

"Patches of mist and fog are likely here too. It will be cold with widespread frost and possible ice as temperatures drop to between -3 and +1 degrees, coldest in the north, in a light northerly wind."

Thursday (November 30) will be another cold day with scattered showers, some of which will be wintry.

The weather forecast currently reads as follows: "Thursday will be cold with temperatures only reaching 3 to 6 degrees. It will be mostly dry with sunny spells at first, apart from some lingering rain and drizzle on eastern coasts.

"Scattered showers will develop over Ulster and Connacht in the afternoon. A few showers are possible near the east coast too towards the evening. Some of the showers will be wintry, especially over higher ground. Light north to northwest winds.

"Another cold night with widespread frost and potentially some icy patches. Scattered showers continuing over Ulster and Connacht, some wintry, possibly extending further south along the west coast through the night.

"Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees, in a light northerly or variable wind that will allow patches of mist and fog to form."

According to the national forecaster, beyond Thursday the cold spell is set to continue with more wintry showers expected.
