The weekend is due to be a chilly one, as temperatures drop below freezing, ushering in a widespread frost across the country.

Met Eireann have said that temperatures will drop as low as -2 overnight, with widespread frost expected.

The weekend will be mostly cold and dry, with drizzle and fog in some places.

For anyone planning to drive in frosty conditions, choose the right winter tyres with correct tread depth and tyre pressure, and keep yor vehicle at a reasonable distance from others to prevent accidents.

Friday

Friday will be a cool and cloudy day, with drizzle across the south west of the country.

The rest of the country should remain dry, with some sun breaking through by the afternoon. Temperature highs of 7-10 degrees.

On Friday night, clear skies tonight will allow temperatures to fall quickly with widespread frost expected.

The northerly breeze will fall light allowing for some mist and fog patches to form with lowest temperatures of -2 to 2 degrees.

Staying a little milder in the southwest with lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees.

Saturday

A cold but a mostly dry start on Saturday morning. There will be some early sunny spells too but drizzle will develop in the west later with highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

Saturday night will stay mostly dry early in the night. Feeling rather cool too with temperatures falling down to 1 to 5 degrees with patchy frost across Leinster.

Staying milder further west with light winds. Mist and fog patches also.

Sunday

A cold beginning to the day, outbreaks of rain and drizzle across western counties will gradually spread east but then break up in the afternoon. A touch milder too with highs of 7 to 11 degrees in light to moderate southeast winds.

Sunday night will see outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Later in the night patchy rain and drizzle will move away to the south with clear spells developing from the north.

There will be some mist and fog patches as winds fall light overnight with lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees.
