TV presenter Kathryn Thomas has spoken about how to achieve your weight loss goals, and it’s not what type of exercise to do or about calorie counting!
Speaking to RSVP, the Operation Transformation host advised people embarking on a fitness journey to team up with a loved one who can hold them accountable.
“Find someone to do it with you or who can encourage you to keep going. This can be a friend, a spouse, maybe even your children, or a professional like a personal trainer.”

It can be intimidating to step out of your comfort zone and go to the gym or attend a fitness class, but having a supportive cheerleader will help motivate you, according to Kathryn.
Setting the correct environment is also important. “You need to put all the stepping stones in place. Try to remove as many obstacles to your success as possible, so shop healthy, schedule when you are going to exercise, and identify any triggers or patterns.”
Lots of people start to snack or graze late at night when their kids are in bed, so Kathryn suggests replacing this habit with something new, such as scheduling a yoga or other gentle exercise class for this time. “You could even go out and walk the dog.”
She also encourages people to really think about why they want to lose weight . “Are you comparing yourself to people on Instagram, your work colleagues, or the other parents at the school gate? Your reason to get fit should be about you and no one else.
“How do you currently feel? How will [weight loss] improve how you feel? Will losing weight actually change the way you feel about yourself, or are you just worried about what others think of you?”
She encourages people to write down the reasons why they want to become more fit and to reflect on them when they start to feel unmotivated. “They will keep you going.”
She also says that just getting outside and going on walks is a good start, and fitness isn't just about a weight loss goal. “Being outdoors in nature has so many proven health benefits.”
Kathryn’s health and wellness retreats company Pure Results is organising a holistic Yoga - Swim - Hike five night retreat in Co. Clare towards the end of May.
Taking place in the Armada Hotel in Co Clare, people will enjoy sea swimming, hiking, walking, jogging, running, yoga, massages and healthy food.
“The food is all locally sourced, and follows a blue zone menu, so a Mediterranean diet,” Kathryn says. “I’ve worked closely with John Burke the owner of the hotel on it.
“We are also working with local hiking guides, sea swimmers such as June Curtin of Snámhaí Sásta.
“You’ll still get your steps in, but it’s mainly restorative, with less of a weight loss goal.”
