In RSVP, we love to celebrate innovative and hard-working women who have taken the initiative to start their own businesses.
Here, Bernadine Grogan of SPICEY B opens up about why she decided to become an entrepreneur and what a typical day looks like for her.
What inspired you to launch your business?
I had worked in retail before setting up SPICEY B. Firstly, in Todds (Brown Thomas), and then I went on to work in Harrods in London where I was merchandiser for Polo Ralph Lauren and Hugo Boss. I thrived there and learned lots. After coming back from London I wanted to work for myself, but I decided to gain a law degree first. I then felt it was time to set up SPICEY B.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
I work hard and I am always looking at what the next trend is. I try not to shove my product down people’s throats. If they want to purchase it, they will.
Has the pandemic changed your business and what have you learned from it?
Yes, it has taught me that people are very resilient. It has also shown me that I was travelling too much to events, and I didn’t have enough confidence in my own ability to succeed. Now, I am ready to bring this business to the next level.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I get into the office for 9am. After checking emails and answering queries, I commence packing orders for the morning and get them done before the end of day. In the evening I get onto my manufacturers to see if there are any new styles coming up and work out when to release them on the site, etc. I also do a daily stock check of my stock to ensure that everything corresponds with my site.
What is your most treasured accessory?
I actually have two! The first is a pair of star earrings from SPICEY B, and the second is my black Mulberry bag that I saved and saved for and got in Brown Thomas. I will love it forever and ever.
Are there any women in business who inspire you?
I am inspired by my Auntie Lily (O’Callaghan) who passed away recently. She worked in Todds, now Brown Thomas, as a buyer for more than 30 years. Lily was excellent with stock control and she taught me all I need to know about profit margins. She used to say “Don’t be a busy fool, and always keep your powder dry.” I also massively respect my little cousin Laura O’Gorman who set up The Beauty Basket last year. She is building her company from strength to strength every day.
