Kieran Cuddihy has recalled his childhood memories of holidaying in the sunny south west.

The Newstalk presenter's favourite place to visit in Ireland is County Wexford and the area holds a special place in his heart after spending all of his summers there.

The radio star and his family still enjoy the fine weather there and he has picked up some great tips over the years.

Kieran told RSVP Magazine: "I love the Hook Peninsula in Co. Wexford, from Duncannon right out to Fethard-on-Sea.

"I can’t remember the first time I was there, but part of the reason I enjoy going there so much is down to sentimentality.

"We used to go on holidays there every summer as kids. That extends back beyond what I can remember as a child."

Kieran remembers going to Wexford as a child, when it was always sunny.

He said: "As with every memory of your childhood, the sun is always shining. The days were simple, we went to the beach at Duncannon, we built dams in the stream and we played pitch and putt and tennis.

"On wet and windy days we used to go to Hook Head to see the waves crashing against the rocks.

"We used to dig for worms when the tide was out and go fishing for worms."

Kieran and his family had the same routine year after year.

He said: "We stayed in the same little house in Ballystraw every summer so it felt like our own house."

As an adult now, where are his favourite places to eat and drink there? The radio star said: "There is Roche’s and The Strand Tavern in Duncannon. Kevin Dundon’s place Dunbrody House is down there as is Aldridge Lodge.

"There’s a cliff walk from Arthurstown to Duncannon and it goes through some of Dunbrody House.

"The King’s Bay Inn in Arthurstown does a great seafood chowder and a pint of porter. As kids, we used to love going to Templar’s Inn near Dollar Bay. It was pub grub but we loved it."

There are great hidden treasure in the area.

He revealed: "The obvious ones are Hook Head, the lighthouse and Loftus Hall. Some of the beaches are hidden treasures.

"They tend to be small cove-like beaches along the peninsula. Even though they might get busy on a hot day, they are still very quiet compared to the well-known beaches around Ireland.

"Baginbun Beach is absolutely amazing, you could be in the south of France if the sun is shining there.

"The water is crystal clear and you can do lots of water activities like sea kayaking, paddle boarding and coasteering."

One major thing makes the area so special for Kieran and that is why should people visit there.

He said: "It has a coastline and beaches that rival anywhere else in Ireland, but you don’t have the mad crowds that they might have to deal with on the Rosslare side of Wexford or the west or southwest of Ireland."
