Do you always have cold hands and feet?

If you’re one of those people who are perpetually cold , it may not be the fault of the changeable Irish climate.

In fact, it could be that you have condition which affects blood circulation in the body known as Raynaud’s phenomenon.

When sufferers feel cold, the condition may cause their toes and fingers to change colour. A similar effect can also occur when they experience strong emotions such as anxiety or stress. Skin can turn white if the blood flow is restricted, blue as blood vessels react and red as the blood returns to the affected areas.

According to the NHS, other symptoms of Raynaud's include pain, numbness, pins and needles and difficult moving the affected area.

The good news is that Raynaud's phenomenon is relatively easy to treat by keeping warm, exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet. It’s also recommended that sufferers cut back on caffeine and avoid smoking to improve circulation.

If symptoms are severe, getting worse or you’re worried, you should contact your GP. In some rare cases, Raynaud’s may be a sign of a more serious condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

And if it’s freezing, don’t forget to wrap up and wear warm gloves and socks.
