Keeping it spicy

“Shower sex can offer a simple way of mixing up your sexual routines and experiences,” says Kate. “Many couples tend to keep the regularity of their sex life to the bedroom, but adding variety in terms of using other rooms of the house is a simple way of adding to your sex life”.

Solo play

The shower is also a great location for self-pleasure, so it's not all about partnered experiences.

LELO’s LILY 3 is a great sex toy for the shower as it fits perfectly in the hand and can be added into all over the body washing or exploration and the INA WAVE 2 is a good option if you want something larger or that can include penetration. Kate continues, “Don't be afraid to take waterproof sex toys to the shower with you as it adds a further layer of physical sensation which can be very erotic when combined with the feeling of water and skin on skin”.

Tune in and zone out

“Our senses are the gateways to our experiences and in terms of shower sex, it offers us an easy way of tuning into all our senses, which can help us to focus our attention on the physicality of what we are feeling. It doesn't all have to be about penetrative sex either - it's the perfect location for non-penetrative sex and adding a water-based lubricant is also possible”. Just be aware of application and spilling as it can make surfaces slippery.

Take the pressure off and get comfortable

“Shower sex is rarely as perfect as it looks on screen in series' and films, and many of us compare our sex lives and bodies to those represented in that way which can make us shy away from it - but these are not realistic versions of sex that are designed to educate” says Kate. “Shower sex can take some moving around and adjusting in terms of water temperature, shower head position, and body positions; this is all a normal part of it but many fear that it might be awkward or embarrassing - but remember that the point is that it's meant to be fun. Sex is not a performance and it's not meant to be perfect”.

Find the right position

“Only use the floor or solid shower walls for leverage when it comes to shower sex positions, as you don't want to cause damage to either yourselves or the shower” says Kate. “If you are using a water based lubricant then also just be aware it can make floors and surfaces slippery.

“In terms of position, it can also work for one partner to lift the other, holding them with their legs wrapped around them - the standing partner can use the wall for leverage. If you don't want to rely on one partner to hold both of your weights, then a sitting or straddled position on the shower floor can work, also with the front partner bent over, with the penetrating partner standing behind - in this position you can also then use the shower wall to push against and for leverage”.
