Long range weather forecasts say that Ireland is in for yet another scorcher of a summer, and we can't wait. But what we are not looking forward to is trying to fall asleep in the heat.
We have found six ways to help you fall asleep in the balmy nights.
1. Light bed clothes
Summer is no time for silky, satin sheets. Invest in cotton sheets because they're breathable. Greatist.com say that cotton sheets are "excellent for promoting ventilation and airflow in the bedroom". If you want to get really extreme with it, pop your sheets in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer a few minutes before you head to bed.
2. A cold hot water bottle
There are two ways to go about this, according to the independent.co.uk.
Firstly, you could fill a hot water bottle with cool water, stick it in the freezer and take it to bed with you, or you can fill it with iced water and dab it on the "cooling points" of your body: Knees, wrists, neck, ankles, elbows and groin (your blood flows closer to the surface here).
3. No more pyjamas
While sleeping in the nude divides people down the middle, loose clothing is something that all sceptics need to get on board with. Sleeping in a loose t-shirt (again, especially cotton) and shorts or underwear stops the clothes from clinging to your body, keeping your body temperature high.
4. Cold shower before bed
Having a cold or lukewarm shower before jumping in to bed is ideal because it will lower your core body temperature and also gets rid of sticky sweat built up over the day
5. Stay hydrated
When you're sleeping in the heat , and you're tossing and turning and sweating, you run the risk of dehydration . Have a glass of water before you go asleep, or a bottle by your bedside to keep yourself hydrated.
Not too much though, no one likes those mid-night trips to the bathroom.
6. Avoid exercise
Not that we need another reason to not exercise , another tip is to relax before going to bed.
Doing any sort of exercise will get the blood going and will raise your body temperature, making it even harder to sleep.
