Met Eireann has predicted that weather conditions will become increasingly colder over the coming days.

A Status Yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning has been issued for a number of counties this afternoon.

The weather alert comes into effect from 6pm on Thursday November 30 and remains in place until 12pm on Friday December 1.

The counties impacted are Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and the whole of Connacht.

A Met Eireann spokesperson says: "Very cold with temperatures expected to fall below -3 degrees in many areas. Frost and ice developing will cause hazardous travelling conditions."

Looking forward to the remainder of the week, Met.ie says conditions will become "increasingly colder with frost and ice and potentially some wintry precipitation."

Here is the weather forecast for the rest of the week - with subzero temperatures and possibly wintry showers hitting parts of the country.

Thursday November 30

Thursday will be a cold and dry day with highs of 3 to 6 degrees during the day.

At night, there will be some widespread frost and icy patches.

Met.ie adds: "Some patches of mist and fog also. Scattered showers will affect western parts of Connacht and Ulster and also some areas along the east coast. Some of these may be wintry. Lowest temperatures of -4 to +1 degrees, with light northerly or variable breezes."

Friday December 1

Frost and mist in he morning will clear paving the way for a cold and dry sunny day, with some showers in coastal areas and highs of 3 to 6 degrees.

"Friday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells and some patches of mist or fog. Some showers will develop in the west and north, possibly turning wintry in the north. Lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees with frost and some icy patches," Met.ie adds.

Saturday December 2

Met Eireann's forecast currently says Saturday will be another cold day with highs of 2 to 6 degrees. At night time, "there's a possibility of rain and drizzle spreading eastwards and turning to sleet or snow for a time as it does so." Lowest temperatures will range between -2 to +2 degrees.

Sunday December 3

Met.ie says: "Sunday will be cold and mainly dry with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees with light breezes."
