Need coffee to get you going in the morning?
Many of us can’t function until we’ve finished that all important first cup of the day. But, do you worry that the cup of coffee may not be the best start?
Good news, it turns out that drinking a cup of coffee is actually good for you.
Researchers in the UK looked at how people’s coffee habits affected their overall health.
The results were published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine and Popular Science.
The research was a giant study of 502,641 people in the UK who were grouped by how many cups of coffee they drank each day. Researchers then looked to see whether the groups that consumed more cups of coffee in a day had more deaths during the course of the study.
They found that the more coffee a person drank up to eight cups a day, the less likely they were to die over the course of the study. Interestingly, they also found that caffeine made no difference to the risk of death, meaning that people who drank decaff aren’t losing out on the health benefits.
The scientists weren’t able to fully explain why drinking more coffee seemed to affect participants’ health. They suggest that people who drink more coffee are more likely to other habits that keep them well.
However, this isn’t an excuse to drink coffee to excess. Taking too much caffeine can lead to headaches , jitteriness and a faster heartbeat. And ff you put a lot of sugar in your coffee, this will also affect overall health.
But, if you’re a moderate coffee drinker, it does mean that you can enjoy your morning cup guilt-free.
