The insurance experts at Quote Devil have revealed which home heating hacks to avoid and have shared some home heating tips that can safely keep you warm this winter:
Heating hacks to avoid
Home-made heating devices
Terracotta heaters are currently being promoted on TikTok with 2.2m views for the hashtag on the app. Quote Devil warns against trying this hack as the DIY heater made from a terracotta plant pot placed upside down on top of lit candles can create a fire hazard. It’s important to avoid constructing makeshift heating devices, as they can pose serious safety risks and may not comply with safety standards.
DIY boiler fix
While it may be tempting to save €€€ by fixing a problem yourself when your heating suddenly cuts out, it’s highly discouraged. The #boilertips on TikTok has over 2.9m views but repairs and maintenance on boilers and heating systems should only be carried out by licensed professionals. DIY attempts may void your warranty and house insurance policy.
Cutting out heating altogether
Arguably the most cost-effective way of saving money on your heating bill, but having no heating in your home can cause more damage in the long run. Colder homes are likely to cause dampness as moisture and condensation are created. Most home insurance policies do not cover damage caused by damp and condensation. Damp can also harm the structure of your property and even cause health problems such as asthma and allergies. Keep your home well heated to avoid condensation forming.
Safe heating hacks
Seal draughts
Keep the majority of the heat in your home with weather stripping or caulk to seal any draughts around windows and doors. Place draught excluders at the bottom of doors to prevent heat from escaping.
Insulate windows
One of the main sources of heat escaping is via the windows. Use thermal curtains or add window film to improve insulation. Install window insulator kits to create a barrier against cold air.
Install a programmable thermostat
Programmable thermostats allow you to regulate the temperature in your home resulting in reduced energy usage.
Maximise sunlight
Make the most of the day by opening the curtains during the day to allow sunlight to naturally warm your home. Remember to close curtains at night to retain heat.
Conor Mulcahy at Quote Devil commented: “Always prioritise safety when it comes to your home and when in doubt, consult with professionals. Additionally, check with your insurance provider to understand the impact of any modifications on your coverage.
"Unauthorised or unsafe modifications may void your insurance policy and put your home at risk. There may be an option to opt for accidental cover for additional peace of mind.”
