Shannon Dolan - Shannon Dolan Hairdressing

Where did your entrepreneurial spirit come from?

Hairdressing has been a huge part of my life from a very young age. My mum comes from a family of seven hairdressers so I was basically born and reared in a hair salon. You could say it’s in the blood! This and working in a salon from a young age inspired me to continue on and open my very own premises at the age of 18. Going on hairdressing courses to London and Dublin also really inspired me to push forward and follow my dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

What’s been the biggest obstacle you’ve faced in your business to date?

Having two children and trying to maintain a healthy work/life balance. I found it difficult being a full-time business owner, trying to maintain a full-time presence in the salon, all while trying to be there for my children when they needed me. Now, with a great support system from my family I find it easier to maintain a work/life balance while continuing to make my business as successful as possible.

What does a typical day running a hair salon look like?

It varies, although most days it is quite hectic. Between leaving my children to school, working a full day in the salon and sorting out the day-to-day running of the business, it can get a bit much at times especially when the salon is busy – but I thrive off the challenge.

The best piece of advice you’ve received in your career so far?

When I had just opened my business my father told me to “work hard in silence and let success be your noise”. This quote really resonated with me throughout my career.

What is the most important haircare tip you offer your customers?

The importance of your aftercare routine at home is vital. Aftercare plays an important role in getting the most out of your hair colour. Many people would try and veer away from buying professional hair care products but wouldn’t think twice about buying expensive skincare products.
